Life As A Father

When I was a young man, I dreamed of being a good dad. I have a great dad. He made time for me, loved me, coached me, and encouraged me through all my mistakes.

When I became a dad myself, I didn’t think I was ready. I remember the first time I had Brailey loaded into her car seat in my 4Runner. I was overwhelmed by the realization that I was responsible for her until she became an adult. I loved that feeling, but I also thought about all the challenges ahead and wondered, Am I really ready for this?

God knew I was ready. He knew it was time for me to slow down and become the man He had called me to be. The belief that I wasn’t ready was a lie—I was ready. I had watched and learned from my dad, and being a father has become one of the greatest joys of my life. Looking back, I realize that people had been praying for me my entire life, helping prepare me for this role.

Now, I am by no means saying that I am perfect at being a father. Believe me, I have made many mistakes along the way, and I still do. The difference is that I try to learn from those mistakes and do better the next time.

A few years later, Braxton came along, and our family felt complete. Today they are both teenagers. Brailey has just graduated from high school, and Braxton is heading into his sophomore year. Time truly does fly.

As much as I love my children, I can’t get over the fact that our Heavenly Father loves us even more. As much joy as I find in being their earthly father, God is a loving and compassionate Father who cares deeply for each of His children.

Through all the challenges that come with being a dad—whether it’s making difficult decisions, navigating financial struggles, or simply trying to get it right—it is all worth it. I am an incredibly blessed man, and if you are reading this as a father, know that you are blessed too.

Enjoy the ride. Make the memories. Take the chances. Be the father God has called you to be.

To all the fathers out there, Happy Father’s Day!
